What we now know as a dedicated server was once called a mainframe when servers where first being used back in the 1950s and 60s. Mainframes were originally used for data processing. The same architectures were used right up until the beginning of the 1990s when the internet was starting to develop. But with the development of the web and other network services, the term dedicated server became more common. And with that, server hosting evolved became what we have today.
